Stage I/ Dec. 2011

•         Preliminary study on obtaining and characterization of films based on CdSe (ZnS) and CdS (ZnS) embedded in inorganic host matrix

Stage II/ Dec. 2012

•           Thin films containing CdSe dopant (as powder and quantum dots) embedded in silicophosphate matrix were prepared by the sol-gel method, spin coating technique;

•           It was investigated the influence of the substrate rotation speed (1000 rpm, 2000 rpm and 3000 rpm), annealing temperature (200, 300, 350, 400 and 550 oC ) and the time elapsed since the sol preparation till the deposition moment on the optical (UV-Vis-NIR transmission) and structural characteristics (FTIR phonons and Raman bands) of the semiconductor-doped films;

•         Fluorescence spectra in Uv domain of mono and multilayers based on CdSe-doped SiO2-P2O5 films was investigated by 325 nm Xe lamp excitation and 325 nm He-Cd laser excitation in dependency on dopant concentration, substrate rotation speed, annealing temperature and the time elapsed since the sol preparation till the deposition moment

•           Dissemination of the research results was made by the presentation of some scientific communications in the frame of international events and by articles publication in ISI quoted journals

Working visit

•           The manager of the project, dr. Elisa Mihail performed a working visit at the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems, Lecee, Italy, in the period 11.112012-17.11.2012, concerning the optical characterization of CdSe doped silicophosfate films. Thus, in the Optical Spectroscopy Laboratory of the host institute, fluorescence measurements, in the visible range have been carried out using different excitation wavelengths both for films and substrates. Also, fluorescence measurements for bulk phosphate glasses doped with CdSe and CdS were carried out. Regarding the obtained results, a working plan was established, which will be applied in the next period aiming at optimizing fluorescence properties of doped inorganic films, materials used in the temperature sensors field based on luminescence effect.

Stage III/ Dec. 2013

•           Silicate films doped with CdSe were obtained by pulsed laser deposition method, modifying the deposition parameters (energy ablation, the pressure in the working chamber, the substrate temperature during     deposition)

•           A structural analysis of deposited films was performed by Raman spectroscopy and microstructure of deposited films by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and EDS (Energy Disperse Spectroscopy)

•           Surface analysis of PLD CdSe- doped films was performed by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and structural units of the base matrix by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy

•           CdSe quantum dot-doped silicate multilayer films have been prepared by sol-gel method, spin coating technique

•           CdS quantum dot-doped silicate multilayer films have been prepared by sol-gel method, spin coating technique

•           Fluorescence emission in the visible domain of CdS and CdSe-doped silicate sol-gel films have been investigated by UV-Vis excitation

•           Fluorescence measurements in dependency on temperature will be performed on CdS and CdSe-doped silicate sol-gel films

Stage IV/2014

•           Two precursor solutions were prepared: a) silicophosphate solution in ethanol, containing CdS/ZnS doping colloidal component; b) silicophosphate solution containing CdS prepared in situ, by chemical synthesis

•           Thin films were deposited from those two solutions, by sol-gel method, spin-coating technique, followed by annealing of the films in order to promote the nucleation and crystallization of the doping component

•           The films were optical characterized (UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy), structural characterized (FTIR and Raman spectroscopy) and morphological characterized (SEM-EDAX and AFM)

•           UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy put in evidence the presence of the doping compound, CdS/ZnS, having fluorescent emission in the visible domain, important characteristic for the next research activities related to the influence of the temperature over the luminescence features of the doped films

•           FTIR and Raman spectroscopy evidenced specific vibration modes of the phosphate matrix, where  P2O5 is the vitreous network

•           SEM-EDAX si AFM investigations revealed both the complex morphology of the deposited films and the presence of the semiconductor crytalline particles

•           The research results were disseminted by ellaboration of scientific communications in the frame of the international events and by publication in ISI quoted scientific journals

Stage V/2015

  • The non-conventional wet route followed by melt quenching method were applied tosynthesize CdS-doped borosilicate glass target for Pulsed Laser Deposition technique;
  • CdS-doped borosilicate films were deposited by PLD technique;
  • Borosilicate bulk glass target was analyzed by  X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy and PLD films were characterized by optical absorption spectroscopy in the UV-Vis domain, fluorescence spectroscopy, optical absorption spectroscopy in IR domain with Fourier Transform (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) combined with Energy Dispersive X-Ray analysis (EDX), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM); the thickness of the films was measured by profilometry method; the band gap value of CdS dopant particles was determined by graphical method and the average size of CdS particles was calculated;
  • Glass targets prepared from un-doped phosphate glass and CdS powder were prepared by mixing, pressing and annealing in inert atmosphere;
  • Vitreous phosphate films containing CdS were prepared by PLD technique and the characterization was done by FTIR, Raman, fluorescence spectroscopy and AFM analysis;
  • Thin films prepared from CdSe 99.99% purity targets by PLD technique were characterized by ellipsometry (absorption coefficient), Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy;
  • Thin films from two targets (combinatorial method) using an un-doped glass target and a CdSe 99.99 % purity target were prepared;
  • CdSe-doped vitreous thin films prepared by PLD combinatorial method werecharacterized by FTIR spectroscopy and AFM analysis.

Stage VI/2016

  • Optimization of the preparation parameters in the case of silicophosphate sol-gel films doped by CdS colloidal;
  • Optical characterization of silicophosphate sol-gel films doped by CdS colloidal by excitation and luminescence spectroscopy and morphological characterization by SEM-EDX analysis;
  • SEM images of silicophosphate sol-gel films doped by CdS colloidal revealed their porous morphology specific to sol-gel method and SEM images on the cross section of the films allowed to measure the thickness (about 100 nm);
  • Films prepared from phosphate glass doped by CdS have been prepared by PLD technique;
  • The up-mentioned films have been characterized by XRD analysis and morphological analysis (SEM-EDX), showing in evidence: (1) CdS crystallites having cubic cell (dimension about 7 nm); (2) the existence of spherulitic and irregular nanometer and micron units specific to PLD technique; (3) the thickness of the deposited films is of micron order; (4) the presence of chemical elements from the glass target, dopant and substrate;
  • Silicophosphate sol-gel films doped by CdSe gave been prepared;
  • The up-mentioned films have been optically characterized by excitation and emission spectroscopy, revealing a narrow luminescence band in the green range of the visible spectrum, suggesting a relative narrow dimensional distribution of CdSe particles;
  • PLD films have been prepared from CdSe target of 99.99 % purity;
  • The investigation of the up-mentioned films deposited in the frame of Stage V/2015 was continued in the present research stage by ellipsometry, luminescence and Raman spectroscopy;
  • XRD analysis put in evidence hexagonal CdSe crystallites also revealed by Raman analysis and luminescence spectroscopy put in evidence luminescence bands in IR range, specific to CdSe dopant, SEM analysis showed in evidence spherulitic units of tens nanometer size, EDX analysis found CD, Se from the target and Si from the substrate and AFM analysis shows ten nanometer roughness;
  • PLD films have been prepared from two targets: one made of phosphate glass containing ZnO and the other made of CdSe 99.99% purity, films prepared in the frame of Stage V/2015;
  • In the frame of the present Stage VI/2016, the deposited films having CdSe concentration gradient have been analyzed by luminescence spectroscopy; the intensity of the luminescence peaks measured in different film zones is correlated with the CdSe amount gradient and the position of the emission peak is correlated with quantum confinement effect provided by the dopant particle size

  • Thermoluminescence measurements (TL) were done on silicophosphate sol-gel films doped with CdSe colloidal and, PLD phosphate films doped with CdS, respectively;
  • TL measurements exhibit two luminescence peaks at 140oC and, 300oC, respectively, the emission being more significant in the case of PLD films, taking into account the higher thickness of these films.
